The North Shore Soup Kitchen is a not-for-profit, volunteer based organization established in 1989 to feed hungry people in the Glen Cove area. Located in the First Baptist Church on Continental Place in Glen Cove, the North Shore Soup Kitchen is staffed by a group of more than 100 volunteers. These volunteers cook, serve and clean up after meals. They also work behind the scenes ordering supplies, writing our newsletter, sorting and distributing donated clothing, keeping our books and raising funds.
Soup Kitchen. The North Shore Soup Kitchen serves nutritious hot meals every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 1pm. Our volunteers serve more than 15,000 meals annually, including Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with all the trimmings. Much of the food is donated by individuals, schools, businesses, religious organizations and community groups. All guests also receive bags of groceries, gently used clothing, diapers, toiletries and other needed items. For many of our guests who are lonely or homeless, the North Shore Soup Kitchen means even more than a hot meal….it may be their only welcoming human contact of the day.
Support Services. The North Shore Soup Kitchen focuses on the causes of homelessness, empowering families and individuals to become self-sufficient. During lunch our on-site caseworker is available to help guests address often overwhelming issues. He directs guests to a wealth of government and community resources including social services, legal help, housing, education, employment services, senior programs, parenting and youth programs as well as medical, mental health and veterans programs. He helps set up appointments and distributes bus passes so guests can get where they need to go.
In the words of some of our guests:
“This place means everything to me.”
“You help the community, help homeless people – the caseworker is here for us and you help with food and clothes”
